How to convert a PDF to Word

  1. Add the PDF

Choose a file or drop it on the box. The page count appears once it opens; enter the password if it asks for one.

  2. Pick pages and options

Leave Pages empty for the whole file or type a range such as 1-3, 5. For scanned pages, keep Read scans with OCR on and choose the languages printed in the book.

  3. Convert and download

Press Convert to Word. The page being read, the text so far and the time left show as it goes; Download what's done saves the pages finished so far at any time.

Good to know

  • On a scanned book, a line printed on every page, such as a digitiser's stamp, is spotted and left out of the document.
  • OCR speed depends on your device: several pages are read at once on a computer with spare cores, fewer on a phone.
  • Text size decides headings: the biggest lines become Heading 1 and 2, short bold lines Heading 3, so the Word navigation pane works straight away.
  • Rows of text lined up in columns become a Word table; check merged or wrapped cells after converting.

Questions people ask

How do I convert a PDF to Word?

Add the PDF, pick the pages if you only want some, and press Convert to Word. A .docx file is ready in a few seconds and opens in Word or any other word processor.

Will the Word file look exactly like the PDF?

Close, not exact. A PDF stores positioned letters, not paragraphs, so the tool rebuilds paragraphs, headings, lists and tables from where the text sits and how big and bold it is. Single-column documents come out well; multi-column layouts, text boxes and complex forms need some tidying afterwards.

Can it convert a scanned PDF?

Yes. Pages that are photos of paper are found as soon as the file opens, and OCR reads their words on your device, several pages at a time. Pick up to three languages, for example English, Hindi and Sanskrit. The reading engine and language data download once and stay on this device. OCR makes mistakes, more so on old print, so check the text; you can also place the page image after its text.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Yes. When a PDF needs a password to open, a box asks for it. The password is used only in this tab to read the file.

Are my PDF files uploaded?

No. Every step runs inside your browser with the pdf-lib and pdf.js libraries. Files never leave your device, there is no size or count limit beyond your computer's memory, and nothing is stored when you close the tab.
