How to test your typing speed
Pick a test
Time (15 to 120 seconds), a fixed number of words, or a quote. Add punctuation and numbers if you want a harder, more realistic text.

Good to know
- Tab or Esc restarts with new text at any time; Enter starts the next test after a result.
- Aim for accuracy first. Every wrong key costs more time to fix than a slightly slower correct one.
- Look at the screen, not your hands. Touch typing, with each finger owning its keys, is how people pass 60 WPM.
- Words are drawn from the 300 most common English words, so the test measures your typing rather than your vocabulary.
- Turn on punctuation and numbers to practise real-world text such as emails and code comments.
- A quote test ends when the last character is correct; a words test ends on the last word; a time test runs out the clock.
Questions people ask
How is WPM calculated?
Words per minute counts every five correctly typed characters, including the space after a correct word, as one word, then scales to a minute. Raw WPM counts everything you typed, right or wrong. This is the standard used by most typing tests, so scores are comparable.
What is a good typing speed?
The average adult types around 40 WPM. 50 to 60 is good for office work, 70 and above is fast, and professional typists reach 90 to 120. Accuracy matters more than speed: a 60 WPM score at 98% beats 75 WPM at 90%.
What does consistency mean?
How steady your raw speed was from second to second. 100% would be a perfectly even pace; big pauses and bursts lower it. Consistent typists tire less and make fewer mistakes.
Can I go back and fix a word?
Yes. Backspace edits the current word, and if the previous word had a mistake you can backspace into it. Ctrl+Backspace (Option+Backspace on Mac) clears the whole word. A word left wrong is underlined in red and its missing letters count against you.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, tap the text to open the keyboard. Autocorrect is turned off for the test. Scores on a phone keyboard are naturally lower than on a physical one.
