How to check and write meta tags
Paste a URL or start typing
Enter a page address and press Check to read its title, description, Open Graph and Twitter tags. Or leave it and fill in the fields yourself to design new tags.
Preview and fix
Switch between Google, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Discord and Slack to see the card each one draws. The inspector lists failures first, then warnings, then what already passes.
Copy the snippet
The code tab holds a head snippet that updates as you edit. Copy it into your page's head; Ctrl+C with nothing selected copies it too.
Good to know
- og:image should be 1200×630 px (1.91:1) and under 1 MB. Facebook, LinkedIn and WhatsApp crop to that shape; X crops summary_large_image to 2:1.
- Keep the title under 60 characters and put the brand at the end. Google rewrites titles it finds too long or repetitive.
- Keep the description near 125 characters. Search results show up to 160, but social cards cut earlier, especially on phones.
- og:url and the canonical link should be the same absolute https URL, or shares and search signals split across variants.
- WhatsApp only reads the first 300 KB of the HTML, so put the meta tags near the top of the head, before large inline scripts.
- After changing tags on a live page, refresh the caches: Facebook's Sharing Debugger, LinkedIn's Post Inspector, and for X just wait a few minutes.
- Add ?url= to this page's address to check a link straight away, for example /tools/meta-tags?url=www.sdev.in.
Questions people ask
Why does my link show no image on WhatsApp or Facebook?
Usually because og:image is missing, relative, or served over http. It must be an absolute https URL to a public image, ideally 1200×630 px and under 5 MB. Facebook also caches the first version it saw; paste the URL into its Sharing Debugger to refresh.
Which title and description lengths are safe?
Google shows about 60 characters of a title and 155 to 160 of a description on desktop, a little less on phones. Social cards show about 125 characters of the description and cut titles near 70 to 90. The inspector flags anything outside those ranges.
Do I need both Open Graph and Twitter tags?
X reads og:title, og:description and og:image when its own tags are missing, but only shows the large image card if twitter:card is set to summary_large_image. Everything else (Facebook, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Slack, Telegram, Discord) reads Open Graph, so add og tags first and the one twitter:card line.
Why do the fetched tags differ from what I see in my browser?
This tool reads the raw HTML the server sends, the same as crawlers do. If your page adds meta tags with JavaScript after loading, crawlers and this tool do not see them. Render the tags on the server or in the static HTML.
Is the page fetched through a server?
Your browser tries to fetch the URL directly first. Most sites block that, so it then goes through a public CORS proxy, which sees the URL you typed but nothing else. The tags you write here never leave your browser.
