How to make a GST invoice

  1. Add your details once

Fill in your business name, address, GSTIN and state, and add a logo and signature if you like. They are remembered on this device for the next invoice.

  2. Add the customer and items

Type the customer, pick the place of supply, then add each item with HSN or SAC, quantity, rate, discount and GST rate. Totals, tax split and amount in words update as you type.

  3. Download or print

Pick a template and colour, then download the PDF (text can be selected and searched), a PNG or JPG picture, or print it straight away.

Good to know

  • Invoice numbers must be unique in a financial year and at most 16 characters, using letters, digits, - and /. The next number is suggested after each download.
  • Each line works out as quantity x rate, less the discount, giving the taxable value. GST is worked out on the taxable value and rounded to the paisa, and round off brings the total to whole rupees.
  • The tax summary groups lines by HSN or SAC and rate, the way GST returns ask for it.
  • Add your UPI ID to print a QR code that opens any UPI app with the exact total filled in.
  • Save draft keeps the whole invoice as a small file you can open again later on any device.
  • Everything is made in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

Questions people ask

What must a GST tax invoice show?

Your name, address and GSTIN; a serial invoice number unique for the financial year; the date; the customer's name and address, and their GSTIN if they are registered; the place of supply; HSN or SAC codes; quantity, unit, value, discount and taxable value of each line; the GST rate and the CGST, SGST or IGST amount; the total; and a signature. This maker lays all of these out for you.

When is it CGST and SGST, and when is it IGST?

Compare your state with the place of supply. Same state: the GST rate is split in half, CGST and SGST. Different states: the whole rate is charged as IGST. Pick both states and the invoice switches by itself.

What is an HSN or SAC code?

HSN codes classify goods and SAC codes classify services, for example 9405 for lamps or 995461 for electrical installation work. Businesses with a turnover up to ₹5 crore print at least 4 digits on B2B invoices, larger ones 6 digits. You can find the code on your purchase bills or in the GST rate list.

How is the GSTIN checked?

The box checks the length, the 2-digit state code, the PAN inside it, the letter Z in the 14th place, and the last check character, which is worked out from the first 14. A typing mistake almost always fails that check. It does not look the number up online.

When do I use a bill of supply, proforma, quotation or estimate?

A bill of supply is for composition dealers and exempt goods, so no GST is shown. A proforma invoice asks for payment before the real invoice. Quotations and estimates offer a price and show a Valid until date instead of a due date.

Is my invoice uploaded anywhere?

No. The preview and the PDF are made in your browser. Your business details, logo, signature and saved customers are kept only in this browser so the next invoice is quicker, and Clear saved data removes them.
