How to make a passport size photo
Add a photo and pick the size
Choose or drop a photo, or take one with your phone's camera. Pick the size your form asks for; 3.5 x 4.5 cm is the common passport size.
Place the face and pick a background
The face is placed for you. Drag and zoom so the top of the head and the chin sit on the guide lines, then choose a white or light background and fix the light.
Download or print
Save the single photo, or a print sheet of 8, 16 or a full page on 4 x 6 inch photo paper or A4, with cut lines and an optional name and date.
Good to know
- Face the light: daylight from a window in front of you gives even light with no harsh shadows on the face.
- Stand a step away from a plain, light wall so no shadow falls behind you.
- Take off glasses if they reflect light, or tilt them a little so there is no glare over the eyes.
- Look straight at the camera with a neutral face and mouth closed; keep both ears and the hairline in view.
- Print at actual size (100 percent). Each photo then measures exactly what the form asks for.
- How it works: an AI model on your device finds the person, the top of that outline places the head, and the photo is cut at 300 dots per inch with that resolution written into the file.
Questions people ask
What is the passport photo size in cm and pixels?
The common passport and visa size is 3.5 x 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm). At 300 DPI, the usual print quality, that is 413 x 531 pixels. The head, from the top of the hair to the chin, should fill about 70 to 80 percent of the photo's height.
How many passport photos fit on a 4x6 print?
Eight photos of 3.5 x 4.5 cm fit on one 4 x 6 inch print, in two rows of four with a small gap for cutting. An A4 sheet takes up to 30. Turning on the name and date strip tightens the gap to 1 mm so eight still fit on a 4 x 6.
Can I get the sheet printed at a photo shop?
Yes. Download the sheet as JPG for a 4 x 6 inch print, or as PDF for A4, and ask for it to be printed at actual size (100 percent, not fit to page). Each photo then comes out at exactly the right size. The file is tagged 300 DPI, so most printers pick the right size on their own.
Does a passport photo need a white background?
Most passport and visa forms ask for a plain white or very light background with no shadows. Pick White and the AI swaps the background on your device. A few forms ask for light blue or light grey, so check yours.
Can I use my phone to take the photo?
Yes. Ask someone to take it from about 1.5 metres away, at eye level, in daylight facing a window. On a phone, Take a photo opens the camera straight from this page.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser. The AI that finds the person downloads once and your browser keeps it, so next time it starts straight away. Your photo never leaves the device.
