How to make a barcode

  1. Pick the type

    Choose Code 128 for text and serial numbers, EAN-13 or UPC-A for products, ITF-14 for cartons, or Code 39 and Codabar for legacy systems. A sample value fills in so you can see the shape straight away.

  2. Type the value

    The barcode redraws as you type. Retail types get their check digit added automatically, and an invalid character shows a message instead of a broken code.

  3. Download

    Save SVG for print and design tools, or PNG for documents and labels. Switch on the list mode to paste many values and download them all as one zip.

Good to know

  • Bar width sets the size of the narrowest bar. Two pixels scans well on screen; for print, download SVG and let the printer scale it, or use 3 or 4 px PNG.
  • The quiet zone is the blank space either side of the bars. Scanners need it; keep at least 10 modules and do not crop the image.
  • Code 128 packs pairs of digits into one symbol, so an all-digit value gives a shorter code than the same length of letters.
  • EAN-13 numbers that start with 890 are Indian; 00 to 13 are US and Canada; 50 is the UK. The first digits only show where the company registered, not where the item was made.
  • ITF-14 is EAN-13 for outer cartons with a leading packaging digit. Real labels add a thick bearer bar around the code; most scanners read it without one.
  • Many codes mode takes one value per line, skips invalid ones and names each file after its value.

Questions people ask

Which barcode type should I use?

Retail products in India and Europe use EAN-13 (the number starts with 890 for India); US products use UPC-A. Shipping cartons use ITF-14. For anything else, such as serial numbers, tickets, asset tags or text, use Code 128: it is compact, holds letters and digits, and every scanner reads it.

Where does the check digit come from?

EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14 end in a check digit worked out from the other digits. Type the number without it and the tool adds it, or type the full number and the tool verifies it and tells you if it is wrong. Code 128 carries its own hidden checksum.

Can I make a real product barcode here?

The image, yes. The number itself must come from GS1 (GS1 India for 890 codes), which licenses company prefixes so that no two products share a code. A made-up EAN will scan but will not be recognised by shops.

Will the barcode scan when printed?

Yes, if the bars stay sharp and the quiet zones are kept. Download SVG for print or a PNG at a larger module width. Do not stretch the image sideways, and print retail codes at least 80% of the standard size, about 30 mm wide.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The codes are drawn in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. Bulk lists stay on your device too.
