Compression

Smallest takes longer; Fast is good for big folders. Photos, videos and zips are already packed, so squeezing them again only costs time.

How to zip files in your browser

  1. Add files or folders

Press Choose files or Choose a folder, or drop them on the box. Add more as often as you like; remove any you do not want.

  2. Pick the options

Choose how much to compress and type a name for the zip, or keep the one suggested.

  3. Make the zip

Press Make zip. On a computer you pick where to save it and it is written straight there; elsewhere it downloads when ready. You can cancel at any time.

Good to know

  • Big folders: choose Fast or None. Smallest saves only a little more and takes much longer.
  • The zip keeps each file's date, and folders get normal permissions when unpacked on any computer.
  • Names are stored in UTF-8, so Tamil and other scripts show correctly on current computers.
  • Cancel stops at once. When saving to disk, nothing half-written is left behind.

Questions people ask

Is there a size limit?

No fixed limit. Files are read and packed piece by piece in a background worker, so memory stays low. On a computer browser that can save to a folder, the zip is written straight to disk, so many gigabytes work. Other browsers keep the zip in memory until it is saved, which is fine up to about 2 GB.

Are my folders kept?

Yes. Choose a folder or drop one, and everything inside keeps its place, including empty folders. Two files with the same name in the same place get (2) added so nothing is lost.

What do the compression choices mean?

None stores files as they are, the quickest. Fast packs lightly, good for big folders. Normal is the usual balance. Smallest takes the longest for a little more saving. Photos, videos and zips are stored as they are unless you untick that option, because they are already packed.

What happens above 4 GB?

The zip switches to the ZIP64 format, the standard way to store big files and more than 65,535 files. Every current computer opens it; only very old unzip programs do not.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The zip is made in your browser and saved on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
