How to compress images to a size

  1. Add images

    Choose files or drop them on the box, as many as you like, or paste an image or a link. Compression starts straight away and each row shows the size before and after.

  2. Set a target

    Press a size chip such as 100 KB or type a number in Target KB. Leave it empty to use the quality slider alone. Same keeps each file's own format; switch to WebP or JPEG for the smallest files.

  3. Download

    Use the button on a row for one file, or Download all to get a zip. The status line shows the total saving.

Good to know

  • Target KB searches for the highest quality that fits, then shrinks the pixel size only if it has to. The row shows the quality it settled on.
  • Max side limits the longer edge and keeps the aspect ratio. 0 keeps the original size, and images smaller than the limit are never enlarged.
  • Conversion runs in web workers with OffscreenCanvas, so the page stays responsive while large photos are processed. SVG files are rasterised on the main thread at their declared size.
  • Animated GIF and WebP files are converted as a still image of the first frame.
  • Green output sizes are smaller than the original. Turning a small JPEG into PNG usually makes it larger, because PNG is lossless.
  • The zip is built in the browser and stores the files without extra compression, since the images are already compressed.
  • A file that fails to decode shows the reason on its row. HEIC and RAW files are the usual cause; export them as JPEG from your phone or camera software first.

Questions people ask

How do I compress an image to under 100 KB?

Type 100 in the Target KB box or press the 100 KB chip. The tool lowers the quality step by step until the file fits, and if the lowest quality is still too big it also reduces the pixel size. Each row shows the size and quality it ended at.

Will compressing reduce the image quality?

Slightly, and the target decides how much. JPEG and WebP at 70 to 85 look the same as the original on screen. Below 40 you will see blocks and smudged edges, and the row tells you when the tool had to go that low.

Why does a PNG not get much smaller?

PNG is lossless, so quality cannot be lowered; only the pixel size can. For photos, switch the format to JPEG or WebP for a five to ten times smaller file. Keep PNG for logos, screenshots and anything with transparency.

Which format gives the smallest file?

AVIF, then WebP, then JPEG, for the same visual quality. WebP is the safe choice: it is about 30% smaller than JPEG and works in every current browser and messaging app.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Compression happens in your browser using the canvas API and web workers. Nothing is sent to a server, and there is no file count or size limit beyond your device's memory.
