How to remove the background from a photo

  1. Add photos

Choose images, drop them on the box, or paste one from the clipboard. You can add many at once.

  2. Remove the background

Press Remove background. The AI gets ready in the background the first time, and after that each photo takes about a second, one after another.

  3. Pick a background and download

Keep it transparent or choose a colour, a blur of the original or your own picture. Drag the slider to compare, tidy the edge, then download one image or all of them as a zip.

Good to know

  • A clear subject against a plain or distant background gives the cleanest cut-out; busy scenes may need the brush.
  • Size and crop sets an exact size such as a passport photo; drag the picture to place the person, and turn, flip, zoom or brighten each photo before you download.
  • Tighten edge firms up a soft outline; Soften edge makes a hard one look less cut with scissors.
  • White or light blue behind a head-and-shoulders portrait makes a passport-style photo; crop it to size in the image resizer.
  • Very large photos are processed at up to 16.7 megapixels, the most every browser can draw; the cut-out is still worked out at the model's size and enlarged.

Questions people ask

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser once and runs on your own device, in a background thread. Your photos are never sent anywhere, and the page keeps working offline once the model is saved.

Why does it get ready the first time?

The cut-out is done by an AI model that runs on your device: 44 MB for Standard (88 MB on computers with WebGPU, where it is much faster) or 7 MB for Fast. It downloads once in the background, on a fast connection as soon as the page opens and otherwise when you add a photo, and your browser keeps it for later visits.

Which model should I pick?

Standard handles people, products, pets and objects. Fast is trained on portraits only: it is quick and small, and good for profile and passport-style photos, but it may keep or drop parts of anything that is not a person.

How good are the edges?

Clean on clear subjects, including hair: the edge is refined against the photo itself and the old background's colour is taken out of semi-transparent strands, so there is no white or coloured halo on a new background. Glass and smoke stay hard for any model. Use Erase and Restore for the odd area, and Tighten or Soften edge beside the photo.

Which file format should I download?

PNG keeps the transparent background and works everywhere. WebP also keeps transparency and is much smaller. JPEG has no transparency, so it is only offered with a colour, blurred or picture background, and it gives the smallest file for photos.
