How to practise typing
Type the drill
A wrong key turns red and the caret waits until you press the right one. Finish the line and press Enter for the next.
Watch the keys turn green
Each key on the board is coloured by how fast and accurately you hit it. Grey keys are unlocked but untested; locked letters are not shown yet.
Unlock the alphabet
When every unlocked key is green, a new letter appears and the drills change to feature it. Twenty-six green keys means you touch type.
Good to know
- Do not race. The drill measures each key; a slow correct key helps, a fast wrong one hurts twice.
- Tab or Esc gives a new drill; Enter continues after one.
- A key stays red when you are slow on it: it is the finger you look for. Practise reaching for it from the home row.
- Raise the target WPM in steps of 5 once the board is green; the keys go grey and you earn them again faster.
- Custom text is good for the things you actually type: your emails, your code, your language's common words.
- Do the lessons first if you are still looking at the keyboard; practice is for speed, lessons are for finger placement.
Questions people ask
How does adaptive practice work?
You start with the six most common letters. Every keystroke is timed, so each letter has a speed and an accuracy record. When every unlocked letter is at the target speed with 95% accuracy, the next letter unlocks. Drills lean on your weakest letter, and the keyboard shows each key from red (slow) to green (learned).
Why made-up words?
Real words need letters you have not unlocked yet. Made-up words that follow English patterns keep the drill limited to your letters and stop you from typing familiar words from memory. Real words are mixed in as soon as enough exist.
What target speed should I set?
35 WPM is a good first target; it is the speed at which typing stops feeling like work. Raise it to 50 or more once all 26 letters are unlocked and the keyboard is green.
Can I practise my own text?
Yes, switch to Custom text and paste anything up to 2,000 characters: a paragraph, a code snippet, song lyrics. Line breaks become spaces and the drill ends on the last character.
