How to repair a damaged PDF

  1. Add the damaged PDF

    Choose the file or drop it on the box.

  2. Repair

    Press Repair. The report lists what looked wrong and which repair step worked.

  3. Check and download

    Every page of the result is drawn to check it, and pages that still fail are listed. Download the repaired copy.

Good to know

  • Your file is never changed: the repair is written to a new copy.
  • A file cut short by a download can lose its last pages; download it again if you can.
  • If a repaired page is blank, its content was missing from the file itself.
  • Repairing a healthy PDF does no harm: it is simply saved again with a clean structure.

Questions people ask

What kind of damage can it fix?

Files cut short by a failed download or copy, a garbled or missing cross-reference table, wrong offsets, stray bytes before the header and a damaged page list. A page whose own content was lost stays blank, and the report names it.

How does it work?

Step by step, stopping at the first that works: read every object and write a fresh cross-reference table; if that fails, remove the damaged parts and read again; then rebuild the page list from the page objects found. The report shows which step worked.

Why is the text not selectable after a repair?

When a file is too damaged for those steps, the pages pdf.js can still draw are saved as images. That keeps what you can see but not the text layer. Run OCR PDF on the result to make it searchable again.

Can it repair a password-protected PDF?

Not while it is encrypted. Unlock it first with its password, then repair the unlocked copy.

Are my PDF files uploaded?

No. Every step runs inside your browser with the pdf-lib and pdf.js libraries. Files never leave your device, there is no size or count limit beyond your computer's memory, and nothing is stored when you close the tab.
