How to add page numbers to a PDF

  1. Add the PDFs

    Choose one or more files or drop them on the box.

  2. Set position and format

    Pick a corner or centre, a format such as 1 or Page 1 of 12, the size, margin and start number.

  3. Add numbers and download

    Press Add numbers. Download each file, or Download all as zip.

Good to know

  • Bottom centre at 11 pt with a 12 mm margin matches most printed reports.
  • Numbers are drawn on top of the page. If a footer already sits there, move them to a corner or the top.
  • For a book with the cover unnumbered, Pages 2- and Start at 1 gives Page 1 on the second sheet.
  • The numbers are real text, so they can be searched and selected in the result.

Questions people ask

How do I number the pages of a PDF?

Add the file, choose where the number goes and how it should read, and press Add numbers. The numbered copy downloads; the original is untouched.

Can I skip the cover page?

Yes. Set Pages to 2- so numbering starts on page 2, and Start at to 1 so the first numbered page reads 1. Of total counts only the numbered pages.

Can I start from a number other than 1?

Yes. Start at accepts any number, useful when a document continues from an earlier part.

What font is used?

Helvetica in dark grey, which is built into every PDF reader so no font is embedded and the file stays small. Numbers are placed the right way up on rotated pages.

Are my PDF files uploaded?

No. Every step runs inside your browser with the pdf-lib and pdf.js libraries. Files never leave your device, there is no size or count limit beyond your computer's memory, and nothing is stored when you close the tab.
