முதல் கோலம் போடுவது எப்படி · How to draw your first kolam

  1. புள்ளி வை · Place the dots

Sweep the spot and sprinkle a little water so the powder holds. Place the dots in neat rows with a pinch of rice flour, just as the design shows.

  2. கோடு இழு · Draw the line

Hold the powder between thumb and finger and let it fall in a thin, steady line. Curve around each dot without touching it, at an easy pace.

  3. நிறைவு செய் · Close and admire

Bring the line back to where it began, add colour if you like, and step back to enjoy it. Tomorrow brings a new kolam of the day.

Questions people ask

How many kolam designs are there?

12,232 designs in 9 styles: sikku kolam, sikku borders, pulli kolam, pulli rangoli, padi kolam, freehand rangoli, corner designs, freehand borders and floor art from other states. Each one can be watched, traced and remixed.

Are these traditional named designs?

They are fresh designs made by the rules of each style: the dot patterns, the sikku line that loops around every dot and closes, the steps of a padi kolam and the rings of a rangoli. So every one can be drawn by hand, and many will feel like the kolams you grew up with.

Is my progress saved?

Your streak, the designs you watched, your stars and saved designs are kept in this browser on this device. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account.

Can I print a design?

Yes. Open a design in Create, save it as a picture and print it at any size, for a notebook, a class or the wall. The dot pattern is written beside every design, so you can also copy it straight onto the floor.

Can I draw these designs at home and at my events?

Yes, please do. Draw them at your doorstep, in the pooja room, at festivals, weddings, school events and competitions. Seeing them on real floors is the whole idea.
