How to test your webcam

  1. Press Start and allow access

    Choose the camera if you have several. On a phone, Switch camera flips between front and back.

  2. Check the picture

    Resolution and frame rate are shown live. Use the grid to frame yourself and Mirror to see what others see.

  3. Take a snapshot

    Save a full-resolution PNG to check focus and lighting, or go full screen to inspect the image.

Good to know

  • Your browser shows a camera icon in the address bar while the preview runs; click it to change the permission or pick a default camera.
  • Frame rate drops in low light because the camera lengthens its exposure. Face a window or a lamp and watch the fps climb.
  • If the capabilities list a higher resolution than you get, another app may already hold the camera at a lower mode.
  • Snapshots are saved at the stream's real resolution, un-mirrored, as PNG.
  • On macOS, apps need permission in System Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera; on Windows it is Settings, Privacy, Camera.

Questions people ask

The camera shows a black screen or nothing at all.

Another app is usually holding it: close Zoom, Teams, Meet, OBS or any other tab using the camera and press Start again. Laptops with a privacy shutter or a camera kill switch (Fn key with a camera icon) show black too.

Why is the picture mirrored?

Mirroring is how you are used to seeing yourself, so the preview flips it by default. Other people see you un-mirrored; turn Mirror off to see exactly what they see. Snapshots are saved un-mirrored.

How do I get 1080p or 4K?

Choose the quality you want and start again. The browser asks the camera for that size and falls back to the closest it can do. Built-in laptop cameras are usually 720p; many external webcams do 1080p at 30 fps.

Is the video uploaded anywhere?

No. The stream goes straight from the camera to the video element on this page. Snapshots are saved to your device only.

Can I test the front and back camera on a phone?

Yes. Use Switch camera, or pick the device from the list. Phones usually name them front and back, or list a wide and an ultra wide lens.
