How to test your mouse
Click every button
Left, right, middle and the side buttons light up on the mouse picture and count each press.
Double-click and scroll
See your double-click gap in milliseconds and count wheel steps up and down.
Move it fast
Move the mouse in quick circles inside the box to measure its polling rate.
Good to know
- A worn switch shows up as a red ring and a double-click problem warning while you click slowly. Click 30 to 50 times to be sure.
- On a touchpad: tap for left click, two-finger tap for right click, two-finger swipe to scroll. Some touchpads use the lower right corner for right click.
- Gaming mice often have a button to change speed (DPI). That changes how far the pointer moves, not the polling rate.
- Wireless mice may lower their polling rate to save battery. Plug in the receiver close to the mouse for the best reading.
- Extra buttons set to keyboard shortcuts in the mouse software will not show here as mouse buttons.
Questions people ask
How do I test my mouse clicks online?
Point at the big test box and click each button: left, right, middle (press the wheel) and the two side buttons if your mouse has them. Each button lights up on the mouse picture and its count goes up by one per press.
How do I know if my mouse double-clicks by itself?
Click once, slowly, many times. If the page shows a 'double-click problem' warning, one press was read as two clicks less than 80 ms apart. No finger can click that fast, so the switch inside the mouse is wearing out.
What is a good double-click speed?
Most people double-click with a gap of 100 to 250 ms. Computers accept up to about 500 ms by default. If your double-clicks are not recognised in apps, make the double-click speed slower in your mouse settings.
What is mouse polling rate?
It is how many times per second the mouse tells the computer where it is. Office mice report 125 times per second (125 Hz), gaming mice 500 or 1000 Hz and some 4000 or 8000 Hz. Move the mouse quickly in circles inside the box to measure it.
Why does the polling rate look low or jump around?
Move the mouse fast and without stopping. Slow movement sends fewer reports. Some browsers only show 60 moves per second; a recent Chrome or Edge shows the full rate. Wireless mice in power saving mode also report less often.
My back and forward side buttons do nothing. Are they broken?
Test them inside the box: if they light up here, they work and only the other app ignores them. If they do not light up, check the mouse software, which may have set the buttons to something else.
Can I test a touchpad or a phone screen?
Yes. On a touchpad, a tap is a left click, a two-finger tap is a right click and a two-finger swipe scrolls. On a phone, taps count as left clicks.
