How to test your keyboard

  1. Click the keyboard

Pick Full size, Tenkeyless or Laptop to match yours, then click the picture to start.

  2. Press every key

Held keys turn dark, tested keys stay light. The counter shows how many are left.

  3. Hold keys together

Press many keys at once to see how many your keyboard can handle. Press Esc when you are done.

Good to know

  • Fn and some media or brightness keys are handled inside the keyboard. No website can see them, so they stay grey.
  • On a Mac, keys pressed while Cmd is down do not report when they are let go. The page releases them when you let go of Cmd.
  • Ghosting: if holding three keys makes a fourth one fail, the keyboard cannot report that group together. Try other groups too.
  • Key repeat speed and delay are set in your system keyboard settings, not by the keyboard.
  • Windows sends Print Screen only when you let go, so it lights up after the press.

Questions people ask

How do I test my keyboard online?

Click the keyboard picture, then press every key one by one. Each key lights up while you hold it and stays coloured once it works. Keys that never light up are not reaching the computer.

Some keys do not light up. Is my keyboard broken?

Try the key in another app first, such as Notepad. If it fails there too, clean under the key or check the cable or battery. Keys like Fn, and some media keys, are handled by the keyboard itself and never reach the browser, so they cannot light up on any website.

How do I check for a stuck key?

If a key stays dark blue after you let go, the computer still thinks it is pressed. The page also shows a warning when one key is held for more than two seconds. Tap the key a few times or clean under it.

What does 'keys pressed together' mean?

It is how many keys the keyboard can report at once, called rollover. Hold several keys down together and watch the number. Office keyboards often stop at 3 to 6 keys in some combinations (called ghosting). Gaming keyboards report 10 or more.

What are code, key and keyCode?

They are what the browser receives. 'code' is the physical key position (KeyA is the A key on any layout), 'key' is the character it types on your layout, and 'keyCode' is the older number some games still use. Location says left, right or numpad.

Can I test a laptop or phone keyboard?

Yes. Choose Laptop for a laptop keyboard. On a phone, tap the picture to open the on-screen keyboard; typed letters and numbers light up and appear in the list of keys you pressed.

Does the page record what I type?

No. Key presses are shown only on this page and nothing is sent anywhere. Reset or closing the tab clears everything.
