The formulas
X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y
X as a percent of Y = X ÷ Y × 100
change % = (new − old) ÷ old × 100
price after discount = MRP − MRP × off ÷ 100
marks % = scored ÷ total × 100; CGPA % = CGPA × 9.5 (common rule)
add X% = Y × (1 + X ÷ 100); amount before X% = total ÷ (1 + X ÷ 100)
Answers are rounded to two decimal places for display. A dash means there is no answer, such as a percent of a total of zero.
How to work out a percentage
Find the right row
Each row answers one everyday question: percent of a number, what percent, change, discount, marks, or adding and removing a percent.
Type your numbers
Each row starts with an example. Replace the numbers with yours and the answer updates as you type.
Copy the answer
Each row has a Copy button for its answer as a full sentence. Ctrl+C with nothing selected copies all rows.
Good to know
- To take tax out of a price that already includes it, use the Before X% was added answer, not Minus X%.
- A shop showing 30% off on an MRP of 1,999 means you pay 1,399.30 and save 599.70.
- Percentage change is measured against the old value, so a rise from 40 to 50 is 25% but a fall from 50 to 40 is 20%.
- Numbers with commas, such as 1,50,000, are read correctly.
- Everything works in your browser as you type. Nothing is stored or sent.
Questions people ask
How do I find a percent of a number?
Divide the percent by 100 and multiply by the number. 18% of 2,500 is 18 ÷ 100 × 2,500 = 450.
How is percentage increase or decrease worked out?
Take the new value minus the old value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 40 to 50 is (50 − 40) ÷ 40 × 100 = 25% more. From 50 to 40 is 20% less, because the change is measured against the starting value.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
A common rule for a 10-point CGPA is percentage = CGPA × 9.5, so 8.2 becomes 77.9%. Many boards and universities use this, but some have their own formula, so check your marksheet or rules first.
How do I take GST or another percent out of a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the percent over 100. A bill of 1,180 with 18% included was 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = 1,000 before the 18% was added. Taking 18% off 1,180 gives a different, wrong answer.
Why does 50% off then 50% more not get me back to the start?
Each percent is taken of a different amount. 50% off 100 is 50, and 50% more of 50 is 75. To undo a 50% fall you need a 100% rise.
