About Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja is a four-day festival devoted to the Sun God, Surya, and Chhathi Maiya. It falls six days after Diwali, in the month of Kartik.

Devotees, called vratis, keep a strict fast, often without water, and offer arghya to the setting sun and then the rising sun while standing in a river or pond.

Families prepare thekua, rice laddoos and fruit in bamboo baskets, sing folk songs and gather at the ghats. It is biggest in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and the Terai of Nepal, and wherever people from these places live.

How people celebrate Chhath Puja

  • Nahay Khay, the holy bath on day one
  • Kharna with rice kheer and roti
  • Evening arghya to the setting sun
  • Morning arghya to the rising sun
  • Thekua and fruit in bamboo soop
  • Folk songs at the ghat

How to wish well

  • Chhath is a day of deep devotion, so keep wishes respectful; avoid jokes.
  • Wish the vratis in the family strength for their fast.
