About Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj is the last day of the Diwali festival, on the second day of the bright half of Kartik. It celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters.

A well-known story tells of Yama visiting his sister Yamuna, who welcomed him with a tilak and a meal. He blessed every brother who visits his sister on this day.

Sisters put a tilak on their brother's forehead, do aarti and pray for his long life. Brothers give gifts and promise to stand by their sisters. It is called Bhau Beej in Maharashtra, Bhai Phonta in Bengal and Bhai Tika in Nepal.

How people celebrate Bhai Dooj

  • Tilak and aarti by the sister
  • A festive meal at the sister's home

How to wish well

  • Send it on the morning of the day, before the tilak.
  • Funny wishes between siblings are welcome, but keep them kind.
  • If you live far apart, a message and a video call mean a lot.
