About Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja is a four-day festival devoted to the Sun God, Surya, and Chhathi Maiya. It falls six days after Diwali, in the month of Kartik.

Devotees, called vratis, keep a strict fast, often without water, and offer arghya to the setting sun and then the rising sun while standing in a river or pond.

Families prepare thekua, rice laddoos and fruit in bamboo baskets, sing folk songs and gather at the ghats. It is biggest in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and the Terai of Nepal, and wherever people from these places live.
