How to draw a simple kolam

  1. Get ready

    Pick the first design on this page, sweep a small spot and sprinkle a little water. A sheet of paper and a pencil work just as well.

  2. Draw the design

    Draw one short line or loop at a time, then stop and check it against the step picture before you go on.

  3. Finish and enjoy

    Close every line, add colour if you like, and step back to enjoy it. Draw the same design again tomorrow and it will come out faster.

  • Most designs here take 3 to 8 minutes. The first few are the easiest, so start there.
  • Practise on the printed dot sheet first. The hand learns the turns on paper, then the floor is easy.
