How to draw a Margazhi kolam

  1. When and where

    Margazhi runs from mid December to mid January. Draw before sunrise, at the front of the house, a new design every morning.

  2. Draw the design

    Draw the big outline first while the street is quiet, then the inner loops, and add colour once the lines are done.

  3. Finish and enjoy

    Add colour if you like, light a lamp beside it, and step back to enjoy it. Take a photo before the day wears it away.

Good to know

  • Most designs here take 15 to 30 minutes. The first few are the easiest, so start there.
  • Practise on the printed dot sheet first. The hand learns the turns on paper, then the floor is easy.
