How to draw an Onam pookalam

  1. When and where

    Onam falls in August or September. Lay a pookalam in the courtyard each of the ten days, the largest on Thiruvonam.

  2. Draw the design

    Draw the rings in chalk, then fill them with petals from the centre out, one colour per ring.

  3. Finish and enjoy

    Add colour if you like, light a lamp beside it, and step back to enjoy it. Take a photo before the day wears it away.

Good to know

  • Most designs here take 18 to 60 minutes. The first few are the easiest, so start there.
  • Practise on the printed dot sheet first. The hand learns the turns on paper, then the floor is easy.
