How to draw a Friday kolam

  1. When and where

    Draw it every Friday, in the morning at the door and in the evening by the lamp, and especially on the Fridays of Aadi and Thai.

  2. Draw the design

    Draw a padi kolam or a lotus, keep every line closed, and leave space in the centre for the lamp.

  3. Finish and enjoy

    Add colour if you like, light a lamp beside it, and step back to enjoy it. Take a photo before the day wears it away.

Good to know

  • Most designs here take 8 to 18 minutes. The first few are the easiest, so start there.
  • Practise on the printed dot sheet first. The hand learns the turns on paper, then the floor is easy.
