How to draw a Pongal kolam

  1. When and where

    Pongal falls in mid January. Draw the evening before Bhogi and Thai Pongal, at the gate and by the stove, and a cow kolam for Mattu Pongal.

  2. Draw the design

    Draw the pot, the sugarcane or the sun in the centre, then the dot pattern around it, and fill it with bright colours.

  3. Finish and enjoy

    Add colour if you like, light a lamp beside it, and step back to enjoy it. Take a photo before the day wears it away.

Good to know

  • Most designs here take 15 to 18 minutes. The first few are the easiest, so start there.
  • Practise on the printed dot sheet first. The hand learns the turns on paper, then the floor is easy.
