How to draw a Navaratri kolam

  1. When and where

    Navaratri runs for nine nights in September or October. Draw a fresh design in front of the golu each evening.

  2. Draw the design

    Draw the design in front of the golu, a little bigger than yesterday's, and finish it before the evening visitors come.

  3. Finish and enjoy

    Add colour if you like, light a lamp beside it, and step back to enjoy it. Take a photo before the day wears it away.

Good to know

  • Most designs here take 8 to 18 minutes. The first few are the easiest, so start there.
  • Practise on the printed dot sheet first. The hand learns the turns on paper, then the floor is easy.
