About Tihar

Tihar is Nepal's five-day festival of lights, held in the month of Kartik (October or November) around the new moon. It is the second biggest festival in Nepal after Dashain.

Each day honours a different being. Kaag Tihar honours crows, Kukur Tihar honours dogs with garlands and tika, and Gai Tihar and Laxmi Puja honour the cow and the goddess of wealth, when homes glow with oil lamps and rangoli. The fourth day is for Govardhan Puja or Mha Puja, the Newar worship of the self, and the Nepal Sambat new year.

The last day is Bhai Tika, when sisters put a seven-coloured tika on their brothers' foreheads, give them marigold and makhamali garlands and pray for their long life, and brothers give gifts in return. Groups of young people sing deusi and bhailo songs from house to house.

How people celebrate Tihar

  • Feeding crows on Kaag Tihar
  • Garlands and tika for dogs on Kukur Tihar
  • Laxmi Puja with oil lamps and rangoli
  • Deusi and bhailo songs
  • Mha Puja and Nepal Sambat new year
  • Bhai Tika with seven colours
  • Sel roti and sweets

How to wish well

  • Say "Shubha Deepawali" or "Happy Tihar". On the last day, "Happy Bhai Tika" to brothers and sisters.
  • Bhai Tika messages are the most loved: write to your brother or sister about a shared childhood memory.
  • A kind word for the family dog on Kukur Tihar is a sweet touch.
