About Songkran

Songkran is the Thai New Year, celebrated from 13 to 15 April, when the sun moves into Aries in the traditional calendar. It is the most loved holiday in Thailand and a time to go home.

Its heart is respect and renewal. People make merit at temples, bathe Buddha images, build sand stupas and pour scented water over the hands of parents and elders in a ceremony called rod nam dam hua, asking for their blessing.

Out on the streets, gentle water blessings have grown into happy water fights that cool everyone in the hottest month of the year. Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Sri Lanka hold related new year festivals at the same time.

How people celebrate Songkran

  • Rod nam dam hua: pouring scented water on elders' hands

How to wish well

  • Say "Suk san wan Songkran" (Happy Songkran) or "Sawasdee pee mai" (Happy New Year).
