About Skanda Sashti

Skanda Sashti, or Kanda Sashti, is a six-day festival of Lord Murugan in the Tamil month of Aippasi (October or November). The sixth day, Sashti, is the day of Soorasamharam.

It remembers the victory of Murugan over the demon Soorapadman, told as the victory of good over evil and of wisdom over pride. At Thiruchendur on the sea shore, and at Murugan temples everywhere, the battle is acted out at dusk before huge crowds, and the Lord's wedding, Thirukalyanam, follows the next day.

Many devotees fast for all six days, eating once a day or only fruit, and chant the Kanda Sashti Kavacham. It is kept across Tamil Nadu and by Tamil communities in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore and beyond.

How people celebrate Skanda Sashti

  • Six days of fasting
  • Chanting the Kanda Sashti Kavacham
  • Soorasamharam at Thiruchendur
  • Thirukalyanam the next day
  • Temple visits each evening

How to wish well

  • This is a devotional festival: "Blessed Skanda Sashti" and "Vel Vel Muruga" suit it best.
  • Send wishes on the morning of Sashti, the day of Soorasamharam.
  • Courage, victory over hardship and Murugan's protection are good themes.
