About Purim
Purim is a joyful Jewish festival that remembers how the Jews of ancient Persia were saved from a plot by Haman, an official of King Ahasuerus, through the courage of Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai. The story is told in the Book of Esther, the Megillah.
It falls on the 14th of Adar, in February or March, and begins at sunset the evening before. In Jerusalem and a few old walled cities it is kept a day later as Shushan Purim.
The Megillah is read aloud in the synagogue, and children twirl noisemakers (graggers) and stamp to drown out Haman's name. People dress up in costumes, send gift baskets of food to friends (mishloach manot), give gifts to the poor and share a festive meal. Hamantaschen, three cornered cookies filled with poppy seed, jam or chocolate, are the classic treat.
How people celebrate Purim
- Reading the Megillah
- Noisemakers for Haman's name
- Costumes and parades
- Mishloach manot food baskets
- Gifts to the poor

How to wish well
- Chag Purim Sameach or Purim Sameach mean happy Purim. It is the most light hearted Jewish holiday, so fun messages are welcome.
- Keep jokes about costumes, cookies and noise. Avoid jokes about drinking or about any people.
- A small basket of treats with a note is a lovely way to wish friends on the day.
