About Nowruz

Nowruz means "new day". It is the Persian New Year and begins at the exact moment of the March equinox, the first day of spring, around 20 or 21 March.

It has been celebrated for more than 3,000 years across Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia, Azerbaijan, the Kurdish regions and the Caucasus, by people of many faiths. UNESCO lists it as a shared heritage of humanity.

Families spring-clean their homes, set a haft-sin table with seven symbolic items such as sprouted wheat, apples, garlic and vinegar, wear new clothes and visit elders. Children receive gifts of money called eidi.

The celebration lasts thirteen days and ends with Sizdah Bedar, when families go out for a picnic in nature.

How people celebrate Nowruz

  • Spring cleaning (khaneh tekani)
  • Setting the haft-sin table
  • Jumping over fires on Chaharshanbe Suri
  • Visiting elders first
  • New clothes and eidi for children
  • Sizdah Bedar picnic on day 13

How to wish well

  • "Nowruz mobarak" (Happy Nowruz) is the most common greeting. "Eid-e shoma mobarak" also works.
  • Visit or call the elders of the family first; it is a sign of respect.
  • Send your wish at the moment of the equinox (the Saal Tahvil) or in the first days of the new year.
  • Nowruz is cultural and shared by many faiths, so a warm spring greeting suits everyone.
