About Naraka Chaturdashi

Naraka Chaturdashi, also called Choti Diwali, is the second of the five days of Diwali, on the fourteenth day of the waning moon before the Diwali new moon. It falls in October or November.

It remembers Lord Krishna, with Satyabhama, defeating the demon Narakasura and freeing thousands of captives. In the south and in Goa, this morning is Deepavali itself, and in Gujarat it is Kali Chaudas; Rajasthan calls it Roop Chaudas, a day for beauty rituals.

Families wake before dawn for abhyang snan, a bath with warm oil and ubtan, wear new clothes and share sweets. In the evening the first rows of diyas are lit, and a lamp is lit for Yama, the god of death, for the long life of the family.
