About Kali Puja

Kali Puja, also called Shyama Puja, honours Goddess Kali on the new moon night of Kartik, in October or November. In Bengal, Odisha, Assam and Tripura it is held on the same night as Diwali.

Kali is the fierce form of the Mother Goddess who destroys evil and protects her devotees. She is worshipped at midnight with red hibiscus flowers, lamps, sweets and prayers.

Homes are lit with candles and clay lamps, and on the night before, families light fourteen lamps and eat fourteen leafy greens on Bhoot Chaturdashi. Neighbourhoods set up pandals, the great Kali temples of Kalighat, Dakshineswar and Tarapith fill with devotees, and Barasat in Bengal is known for its pandals.

How people celebrate Kali Puja
