About Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja is the fourth day of the Diwali festival, on the first day of the bright half of Kartik. In many years it falls the day after Lakshmi Puja, and sometimes a day later.

It remembers the story of young Krishna lifting Govardhan hill on his little finger to shelter the people and cows of Gokul from a week of heavy rain. It is a day of thanks for food, nature and protection.

Families shape a small Govardhan hill from cow dung or clay in the courtyard, decorate it with flowers and lamps, and walk around it in prayer. Temples and homes offer Annakut, a mountain of many dishes, sometimes 56, to Lord Krishna and share it as prasad. Cows are washed and decorated.

In Gujarat the same day is Bestu Varas, the Gujarati New Year, and in Maharashtra it is Bali Pratipada or Padwa. It is biggest in Mathura, Vrindavan and the Braj region.

How people celebrate Govardhan Puja

  • Making a small Govardhan hill in the courtyard
  • Annakut, a mountain of dishes for Krishna
  • Walking around the hill in prayer
  • Washing and decorating cows
  • Visiting Govardhan in Braj for parikrama
  • New Year greetings in Gujarat

How to wish well

  • Send wishes in the morning, as Annakut is offered at midday.
  • "Jai Shri Krishna" and "Jai Giriraj Maharaj" are warm greetings for the day.
  • For Gujarati friends, add a New Year wish: "Saal Mubarak" or "Nutan Varshabhinandan".
  • A wish of thanks for food and family fits the spirit of Annakut.
