About Dhanteras

Dhanteras is the first day of the five days of Diwali. It falls on the thirteenth day of the dark half of the month of Kartik, two days before the main Diwali night.

The day honours Lord Dhanvantari, the god of healing, who is said to have come out of the ocean with a pot of nectar. Families also pray to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera for wealth.

People buy gold, silver, new utensils or a small item for the home, light the first lamps of Diwali at the door and keep a lamp for Yama in the evening for the long life of the family.

How people celebrate Dhanteras

How to wish well
