About Carnival
Carnival is the great festival of music, costumes and street parades held in the days before Lent, the forty days of fasting before Easter. It falls in February or early March.
Its roots are in old European feasts before Lent. In Brazil and the Caribbean it grew into something new, shaped by African, Indigenous and European music and dance.
Rio de Janeiro is famous for its samba school parades, Salvador for its music trucks and Recife and Olinda for frevo dancing and giant puppets. Trinidad and Tobago has steelpan and soca, and New Orleans has Mardi Gras. Cities in Europe, such as Venice and Cologne, hold masked balls and parades.
How people celebrate Carnival
- Samba school parades
- Street bands (blocos)
- Costumes, masks and glitter
- Frevo and steelpan music
- Confetti and streamers
- Family parades for children
How to wish well
- "Feliz Carnaval" works in Portuguese and Spanish, and "Happy Carnival" in English.
- Keep messages bright and playful: colour, music and dancing are the heart of it.
- For customers, mention holiday hours; many businesses in Brazil close for Carnival Monday and Tuesday.
- Ash Wednesday, the day after, is a quiet day for many Christians.
