About Bhogi
Bhogi is the first day of the four-day Pongal festival in Tamil Nadu and of Sankranti in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It falls on the last day of the Tamil month of Margazhi, the day before Thai Pongal.
The idea of Bhogi is "pazhayana kazhithalum puthiyana puguthalum": letting go of the old and welcoming the new. Homes are cleaned and painted, and old things are cleared out. Many towns now ask families to avoid burning rubbish, and a small, clean bonfire or giving things away keeps the spirit without the smoke.
In Tamil homes a kaappu of neem, avaram and mango leaves is tied over the door, children beat small Bhogi drums, and a sweet like poli is made. In Telugu homes the morning bonfire is the Bhogi mantalu, and in the evening young children are showered with Bhogi pallu, a blessing of regi fruits, flowers and coins.

- "Iniya Bhogi Nalvazhthukal" in Tamil and "Bhogi Subhakankshalu" in Telugu are the usual greetings.

- Many people send one wish for all four days; you can add Pongal or Sankranti wishes for the next day.
