About Lohri

Lohri is the winter harvest festival of Punjab, held on the night before Makar Sankranti, usually on 13 January. It marks the end of the coldest days of winter and the season of sugarcane and the rabi crop.

Families light a bonfire after sunset, walk around it and offer til, gur, peanuts, popcorn and rewri to the fire. Folk songs remember Dulla Bhatti, a Punjabi hero of folk tales who is said to have helped poor girls get married.

The first Lohri of a newborn baby or a newly married couple is a big family event, with dhol, bhangra, giddha and a meal of makki di roti and sarson da saag.

Lohri is celebrated by Punjabi Sikh and Hindu families in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Delhi, and by Punjabi communities in Canada, the UK, the US and Australia.

  • Children going door to door singing Lohri songs
  • Big celebrations for a baby's or a bride's first Lohri

  • "Lohri diyan lakh lakh vadhaiyan" is the warm Punjabi way to greet.
  • Lohri leads into Makar Sankranti and Maghi the next day, so you can greet for both together.
