About Vishu
Vishu is the new year festival of Kerala, on the first day of the Malayalam month of Medam, when the Sun enters Mesha. It usually falls on 14 April.
The day begins before dawn with the Vishukkani, the first sight of the year. A tray of rice, golden konna flowers, fruits, a mirror, gold, a new cloth and a lit lamp is set before an image of Krishna, and each person is led to it with eyes closed.
Elders then give kaineettam, a small gift of coins, to the young ones. The day goes on with a Vishu sadya, sparklers and crackers, and visits to temples such as Sabarimala and Guruvayur. Vishu is celebrated across Kerala and by Malayalis around the world.
How people celebrate Vishu
- Vishukkani, the first sight of the year

How to wish well
- Send wishes early on Vishu morning, after the family has seen the kani.
- "Vishu Ashamsakal" (വിഷു ആശംസകൾ) is the usual Malayalam greeting.
