About Vasant Panchami

Vasant Panchami, also called Basant Panchami, welcomes spring. It falls on the fifth day of the bright half of the month of Magha, usually in late January or February, when mustard fields turn yellow across North India.

The day is sacred to Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of learning, music and the arts. Students place their books and pens before her, musicians honour their instruments, and many young children write their first letters, a ritual called Vidya Arambh or Hate Khori.

People wear yellow, cook sweet yellow rice and kesari dishes, and in Punjab and nearby the sky fills with kites. In West Bengal, Assam, Odisha and Tripura it is Saraswati Puja, with pandals in schools and neighbourhoods and khichuri and kul berries as prasad.

How people celebrate Vasant Panchami

  • Wearing yellow
  • Saraswati Puja with books and instruments
  • First letters for little children
  • Kesari rice, boondi and yellow sweets
  • Kite flying in Punjab and nearby
  • Pandals in schools and colleges in Bengal

How to wish well

  • Wish students and teachers in particular; a line on learning or exams always fits.
  • For Bengali friends, say "Shubho Saraswati Puja".
  • Morning wishes work best, before the puja and anjali.
  • Mention spring and the colour yellow to keep it bright and cheerful.
