About Varalakshmi Vratham

Varalakshmi Vratham is a prayer to Goddess Lakshmi as Varalakshmi, the giver of boons. It is kept on the Friday before the full moon in the month of Shravana, in July or August.

Married women, and in many homes the whole family, keep the vratham for the health, wealth and well-being of their families. A kalasam, a pot filled with rice or water and topped with a coconut, is decorated as the Goddess with a face, jewels, a saree and flowers.

The pooja includes a sacred yellow thread tied on the wrist, songs and stories of the Goddess, and sweets such as payasam and kozhukattai or bobbatlu. Neighbours and friends are invited for thamboolam. It is widely kept in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
