About Vaikunta Ekadasi

Vaikunta Ekadasi is the most sacred of the 24 Ekadasi days for devotees of Lord Vishnu. It falls on the Ekadasi of the bright fortnight in the Tamil month of Margazhi, in December or January.

Devotees believe the gates of Vaikuntha, the abode of Vishnu, open on this day. Vishnu temples open a special northern door, called the Paramapada Vasal or Swarga Vasal in Tamil and the Uttara Dwaram in Telugu, and long queues form before dawn to pass through it.

Many people fast through the day, stay awake through the night with bhajans and the Lord's names, and break the fast on Dwadasi. Srirangam, Tirupati and Vishnu temples across the south see their biggest crowds of the year.

How people celebrate Vaikunta Ekadasi

  • Fasting through the day
  • Dawn darshan through the Paramapada Vasal
  • Staying awake with bhajans
  • Reading the Vishnu Sahasranama
  • Breaking the fast on Dwadasi

How to wish well

  • This is a devotional day: "Blessed Vaikunta Ekadasi" suits it better than jokes.
  • "Om Namo Narayanaya" and "Govinda" are common lines in wishes.
  • Send wishes early in the morning, as many devotees are at the temple before dawn.
