About Thai Amavasai

Thai Amavasai is the new moon day of the Tamil month of Thai, in January or February, soon after Pongal. With Aadi Amavasai and Mahalaya Amavasai, it is one of the three most important days in the year for honouring ancestors.

Families offer tharpanam with sesame seeds and water for their departed elders, often at the sea, rivers or temple tanks such as Rameswaram, Kanyakumari and Thiruvaiyaru. Many fast until the rituals are done and give food to the needy.

It is a quiet, respectful day of gratitude, coming in the harvest month as a reminder of those who worked the land before us.

How people celebrate Thai Amavasai

  • Tharpanam for ancestors
  • Holy dips at the sea and rivers
  • Fasting until the rituals
  • Feeding crows and the needy
  • Temple visits

How to wish well

  • This is a day of remembrance: send blessings, not "Happy Thai Amavasai".
  • Avoid jokes; a short line of gratitude to elders is best.
  • "Thai Amavasai blessings" or "தை அமாவாசை ஆசிகள்" are respectful.
