About Teachers' Day (India)

Teachers' Day is celebrated in India on 5 September, the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a great teacher and philosopher who became India's second President.

When his students asked to celebrate his birthday, he said it would be a greater honour if the day were kept for all teachers. India has done so since 1962.

Students bring flowers, cards and small gifts, put on shows for their teachers, and senior students often take classes for the day. Many people also call or message a teacher who made a difference in their life.

World Teachers' Day is on 5 October, but in India the main day is 5 September.

How people celebrate Teachers' Day (India)

  • Cards, flowers and handmade gifts for teachers
  • Senior students teaching classes for a day
  • School programmes, songs and skits
  • Calling an old teacher to say thank you
  • National awards for teachers

How to wish well

  • A short personal line about what the teacher taught you means more than a long poem.
  • Children can sign their own name on the card; parents can add a line of thanks.
  • Remember teachers outside school too: music and sports coaches, tutors and mentors at work.
  • Keep funny wishes gentle and kind, never about a teacher's looks or age.
