About Sohrai

Sohrai is a harvest festival of the Adivasi and farming communities of Jharkhand and nearby states. In much of Jharkhand it falls the day after Diwali, at the start of Kartik, and it honours the cattle that work the fields.

Before the festival, women repaint the mud walls of their homes with Sohrai art: animals, birds, trees and flowers drawn in red, black, white and yellow earth. The craft from Hazaribagh is now known across India.

Lamps are lit in the cattle sheds, cows and bullocks are bathed, their horns oiled and decorated, and families sing and dance through the night. The Santal community keeps its own Sohrai in January, after the paddy harvest, with similar joy and thanks.
