About Saraswati Pooja

Saraswati Pooja is the ninth day of Navaratri in South India, the day before Vijayadashami. It honours Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of knowledge, music and the arts.

Families place books, pens, musical instruments and tools before the Goddess, decorate them with sandal paste, kumkum and flowers, and do not study or play the instruments until the next day. In Tamil Nadu the same day is kept as Ayudha Pooja.

On Vijayadashami the books are taken back after prayers, and young children begin their learning by writing their first letters in rice, a custom called Vidyarambham, especially popular in Kerala.

How people celebrate Saraswati Pooja

  • Books and instruments placed before the Goddess
  • No studying until Vijayadashami
  • Sundal and pori offerings
  • Vidyarambham, a child's first letters
  • Golu doll displays

How to wish well

  • Students and teachers love Saraswati Pooja wishes; mention exams, music or art.
  • Many send one wish for Saraswati Pooja and Ayudha Pooja together.
  • "Saraswati Pooja Nalvazhthukal" is the usual Tamil greeting.
