About Republic Day (India)

Republic Day is celebrated in India on 26 January. On this day in 1950 the Constitution of India came into force and India became a republic, governed by laws written by and for its own people.

The Constitution was drafted by the Constituent Assembly, with Dr B. R. Ambedkar as chairman of its drafting committee. The date 26 January was chosen because on that day in 1930 the call for complete independence, Purna Swaraj, was made.

The day begins with the flag being unfurled and the national anthem. A grand parade in New Delhi shows the armed forces and colourful tableaux from every state. Schools, offices and housing societies hold flag hoisting, songs and sweets.

It is a national holiday across India, and Indian communities around the world mark it at embassies and community halls.

How people celebrate Republic Day (India)

  • Flag hoisting and the national anthem in the morning
  • Watching the Republic Day parade
  • School programmes, patriotic songs and speeches
  • Wearing the tricolour colours
  • Sweets for children after the flag hoisting
  • Honouring soldiers and gallantry awardees

How to wish well

  • Send wishes early in the morning, before or after the flag hoisting.
  • Keep the tone proud and respectful. Leave out politics, party names and jokes about the nation.
  • Republic Day is about the Constitution, rights and duties. Independence Day on 15 August is about freedom from colonial rule.
  • Treat the flag with respect in any image you share: never upside down, torn or used as a costume.
  • For offices and businesses, a short line with thanks and "Jai Hind" works well.
