About Raja Parba

Raja Parba is a three-day festival of Odisha in mid June, at the start of the monsoon. The main day, Raja Sankranti, is when the Sun enters Mithuna, and it marks the start of the farming season.

The festival honours Mother Earth, Basumata, who is believed to rest during these days before the rains bring new life. It is also a celebration of womanhood: girls and women take a break from household work, wear new clothes and alta, and enjoy the days.

Rope swings are hung from trees, Raja songs fill the villages, and families make poda pitha, a baked rice cake, along with other treats. Farmers do not plough the land during the festival.

How people celebrate Raja Parba
