About Puducherry Liberation Day
Puducherry Liberation Day is celebrated on 1 November. On that day in 1954 the French settlements of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam were handed over in practice (de facto) to India, after nearly three centuries of French rule.
The day is a holiday in the Union Territory. Flags are hoisted, the government honours freedom fighters, and schools and towns hold cultural programmes.
Puducherry keeps a unique blend of Tamil and French heritage, from the temples of the old Tamil town to the yellow houses of the French Quarter and the seaside promenade.
