About New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is the last day of the year, 31 December. It ends at midnight with the start of New Year's Day.

People gather with family and friends for dinner, music and games, then count down the last ten seconds together. Fireworks light up the sky in many cities at midnight.

Customs differ around the world: in Spain people eat twelve grapes at the twelve chimes, in Scotland Hogmanay is a big night, and in many homes people make a wish or a resolution for the new year.
